M63 - The Sunflower Galaxy
M63 (NGC 5055) is a type-Sb or -Sc spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici. Also known as the Sunflower Galaxy, M63 forms a physical group with The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51. Both galaxies lie at a distance of about 37 million lightyears. See the Messier Index - M63 for more information and images.
This image was obtained on 22 May 2008 with a William Optics FLT110 f/7 4.3" refractor and an SXV-H9 CCD camera. 175, 20-second images were combined to obtain an equivalent 58.3 minute monochrome exposure.
For comparison, this is a 17.75-minute composite of 71, 15-second subexposures from 4 June 2000 taken with a 16" Meade Starfinder Newtonian telescope and a homebuilt Cookbook CCD camera.
