NGC7317 7318 7319 7320
Stephan's Quintet is a group of five galaxies in the constellation Pegasus. The small round galaxy at the upper middle of the image is NGC7317, the largest galaxy in this group to the upper right is NGC7320. It's believed that NGC7320 may not be a physical member of the group, but rather is just in our line of sight. The faint round galaxy to the far right of the image is NGC7320C. The two galaxies in the middle of the image are NGC7318A (left) and NGC7318B (right). To the right of these two galaxies is NGC7319. These three galaxies at the center of the image apparently are colliding with each other causing gravitational distortion of their spiral arms. This distortion can be better seen in the image below which is further enhanced to highlight the fainter details. This image is a composite of 24, 20-second images from 22 December 1997.
