M76 - The Little Dumbbell Nebula
The Little Dumbbell Nebula (M76) / (NGC650/651) is a planetary nebula
in the constellation
Perseus. It
is also sometimes called the Cork Nebula and the Butterfly Nebula. It
is the result of a star which ejected its outer shell of gas into surrounding
space. This object's distance is not accurately known, but is estimated
to be at a distance of approximately 3400 light years. More information

This image is a composite of subexposures from three different dates spanning two years. 30 15-second subexposures in cyan (3Oct99), 28 15-second subexposures in magenta, and 35 15-second subexposures in yellow (8Oct99) were combined with eleven 20-second subexposures in white (no filter) (22Dec97) and 45 15-second subexposures in white (IR-filtered only) (8Oct99). The image below is the white component.
