M17 - The Omega Nebula
M17 - The Omega Nebula is located in the constellation Sagittarius. This is an area of recent or continuing star formation located approximately 5000-6000 light years away. More information about this nebula can be found at the Messier Index - M17 and at the Web Nebulae - M17.
The above image is a color composite of a monochrome ccd image (shown below) combined with the color information from a 30-minute Fuji-800 color film image of this nebula obtained on 31 July 1997 (shown at bottom of this page).
The above image is a composite ccd image from 7, 15-second integrations obtained on 7 August 1997. The image below is a 30-minute exposure at the prime focus of a 16" f/4.5 Newtonian using hypered Fuji 800 film taken on 31 July 1997.
