IC434 / Barnard 33
The Horsehead Nebula
The Horsehead Nebula in Orion (Barnard 33) is a dark region of dust and non-luminous gas that blocks the red background light from the bright reflection nebula (IC434). The nebula is located approximately 1,600 light years away.

This image is color composite consisting of individual exposures through white, cyan, magenta and yellow filters (WCMY). The white (luminance) component is from the below image. CMY exposures were: 28x15sec, 26x15sec, and 19x15sec.
This image was obtained on 11 September 1999 and is a composite of 53 fifteen-second exposures.
