M82 - The Cigar Galaxy
The Cigar Galaxy (M82) is an irregular galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major and is located about 12 million light years away. The core of M82 has apparently suffered from a relatively recent encounter with M81. More information about M82 can be found at the Messier Index - M82.
The above image is a composite image which used the color information from a section of the below film image as the chrominance portion of the composite combined with the monochrome ccd image shown at the bottom of this page used as the luminance portion of the combined image. The color film portion is cropped from a 29-minute exposure at the prime focus of a 16" f/4.5 Newtonian using hypered Fuji Super HG400 film taken on 29 September 1995. The luminance portion of the image (which provides the greater detail) is from a 160-second (16x10sec) ccd image taken on 28 May 1997.
