M31 - The Andromeda Galaxy
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is a relatively close spiral galaxy in the constellation Andromeda that is approximately 2.9 million light years distant. This galaxy is so bright and relatively close that it can be seen with the naked eye under dark skies and is quite impressive when viewed through binoculars. More information about The Andromeda Galaxy can be found at the Messier Index - M31. The small round galaxy in the upper left part of this image is M32, a companion galaxy to M31. This image is from a 20-minute exposure at the prime focus of a 16" f/4.5 Newtonian using hypered Fuji Super HG400 film taken on 4 September 1995.
