M27 - The Dumbbell Nebula

M27 - The Dumbbell Nebula

The Dumbbell Nebula in Vulpecula.  The largest of the class of planetary nebulae, M27's distance is estimated to be about 900 light years.  The central star is magnitude 13.5 and as with all planetary nebulae it is a hot bluish dwarf.  The nebula is formed by the ejection of material from the hot central star.  More information about this fascinating object can be found at the Web Nebulae - M27 and at the Messier Index - M27.   This image is from a 22-minute exposure at the prime focus of a 16" f/4.5 Newtonian using hypered Fuji Super HG400 film taken on 28 September 1995.  The below version of the same image includes the surrounding star field.
