NGC 7293 - The Helix Nebula

The Helix Nebula

The Helix Nebula (NGC7293) in Aquarius is the closest of the class of planetary nebulae.  The nebula's distance is estimated to be only about 450 light years.  As with all planetary nebulae, it is formed by the ejection of material from the hot central star.  More information about this object can be found at the Web Nebulae - Helix Nebula.  This image is from a 30-minute exposure at the prime focus of a 16" f/4.5 Newtonian using hypered Fuji HG800 film taken on 31 July 1997.  Another version of this same image is shown below, processed more harshly to bring out faint detail in the nebula.
